Embrace your inner fair-weather commuter

Are you a fair-weather cyclist? Or a fair-weather walker, even? Is the current cold snap putting you off getting on your bike for work and instead opting for the car, taxi or bus?

We get it. It can be pretty unpleasant out there. And no one wants to arrive at work wet through and freezing cold. But there will be times throughout February when we can all keep a healthier commute going, while still staying warm and dry.

Arrive Happy is about making the most of those moments.

Whether checking the weather app the night before or poking your nose out the front door as you make your first cup of tea there will be milder days that will make us want to get out of our cars and off the buses ready to enjoy a healthier commute to work. You never know, there might even be some of that glorious morning sunshine that only a crisp winter day can give us.

All you have to do is wrap up warm. You have nothing to lose but the odd glove.

Over the last year we’ve been talking to people right across the Liverpool to find out what they like about their commute. Cyclists report how it allows them to get exercise and clear their heads in a way that can set them up for a day at work or wind them down for a relaxed evening at home. Similarly walkers report a sense of health and wellbeing that you just don’t get by being stuck in a traffic jam.

Did you know that only 3% of commutes across Liverpool City Region are done by bike? Or that only 60% of people walk if their journey is under a 1km? That means a lot of people aren’t getting the exercise benefits that a healthier commute can offer.

Did you know that only 3% of commutes across Liverpool City Region are done by bike? Or that only 60% of people walk if their journey is under a 1km? That means a lot of people aren’t getting the exercise benefits that a healthier commute can offer.

But it’s not hard to get going.

You don’t need to go ‘full Lycra’ or even do the whole journey by foot. Why not get off the bus a couple of stops earlier and walk a bit? Or cycle to the train station in the morning? Even a small change will start to positively affect your mood and health as you quickly feel the benefits of a healthier morning and evening routine.

With that in mind here are a few Arrive Happy top winter tips for a healthier commute;

  • Wrap up warm – you can still be stylish

  • Walk with a friend – look up from that screen

  • Get off a stop early on the bus – the perfect way to ease yourself into a healthier commute

  • Plan to walk home just once a week – you don’t have to do it every day

  • Make sure your bike is easily accessible – no one wants to be fighting a shed to liberate a bicycle at 7.30am

But most of all enjoy what you’re doing. Over the last year every single person we’ve spoken to has reported the same thing – a ‘feel good factor’ you just don’t get when stuck in traffic every day.
